Fire crews from across Cayuga County responded to a massive barn fire Saturday night that leveled a structure on Canoga Road and kept firefighters on scene for nearly five hours.
The Aurelius Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 7:10 p.m. on July 5. Units from Aurelius responded immediately. As the fire escalated, mutual aid was requested from surrounding departments including Throop, Owasco, Cayuga, Montezuma, Fleming, and the Cayuga County Rehab unit.
At one point, command requested a full tanker box, prompting a coordinated water shuttle operation to support the fire suppression effort. Crews from multiple agencies worked through overhaul after the barn had collapsed, ensuring all remaining hot spots were extinguished.
Firefighters completed cleanup operations and returned to service by 12:13 a.m. No injuries were reported, and there was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.
