Auburn city officials want the school district to help cover the $200,000 annual cost of crossing guards, according to The Citizen. The city has budgeted only half that amount for the 2025–26 year and is urging the district to contribute the rest — and eventually take on the full expense.
Mayor Jimmy Giannettino argues it’s a shared responsibility, especially since the school district spans multiple towns. However, Superintendent Dr. Misty Slavic says state law restricts the district from funding guards unless their number increases, creating a legal dispute.
Despite differing legal interpretations, both sides express willingness to find a resolution. Talks are expected to continue after upcoming leadership changes in the school board.
