A $60 million overhaul of Route 36 through Hornell has hit a snag over streetlight responsibilities. According to the Hornell Evening Tribune, while the city agreed to maintain 63 new lights, the Village of North Hornell rejected the original request to handle 56, offering to manage only nine.
City officials argue this reduced lighting could jeopardize safety and undermine the multi-use trail meant to boost tourism and commerce. Mayor John Buckley urged North Hornell to reconsider, stressing the project’s long-term value.
North Hornell’s mayor insists the village can’t absorb the extra load but is negotiating a modest increase. Meanwhile, the project — featuring a new roundabout and pedestrian trail — heads to bid this summer.
