A Cayuga County man has been arrested and charged with felony drunk driving after deputies found him lying in the roadway next to a homemade, gasoline-powered scooter.
Charles V. Newkirk, 54, of Sterling, was arrested on June 14 and charged with DWI – Previous Conviction within 10 years and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the First Degree, both class E felonies.
Deputies responded to a report around 6:40 p.m. of an intoxicated man operating a motorized scooter. When they arrived, they found Newkirk lying in the road. Investigators determined he had been riding the scooter while intoxicated.
Newkirk was processed at the Public Safety Building and taken to the Cayuga County Jail for arraignment in CAP Court. He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Sterling Court at a later date.
