A Sterling man is facing two misdemeanor criminal mischief charges after deputies said he recklessly operated a side-by-side ATV and caused nearly $14,000 in damage to two vehicles.
The Cayuga County Sheriff's Office said Justin C. Brown, 31, of Sterling, was arrested at 7:32 p.m. June 29 on two counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief, a misdemeanor.
Deputies said the case began June 16, when they responded around 4:57 p.m. to an address in the town of Sterling for a complaint involving damage to two vehicles.
Investigators determined Brown recklessly operated the ATV, causing $13,961.76 in damage to two vehicles parked in a driveway, according to the sheriff's office.
Deputies said they attempted to contact Brown multiple times and later filed for an arrest warrant through Sterling Town Court. Brown then contacted the sheriff's office and turned himself in.
Brown was processed and brought to centralized arraignment, where he was released on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to appear in Sterling Town Court at a later date.
Anyone with information about the incident can contact the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office at 315-253-1222 or submit a tip through the county's tip line or SaferWatch app. Brown is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
