Steuben County law enforcement on Saturday marked the one-year anniversary of a powerful educational tool designed to save lives by confronting the dangers of reckless driving.
The Emilee’s Challenge Trailer, unveiled on June 21, 2024, has reached approximately 3,000 people since its debut. The exhibit, created by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, uses graphic real-life crash scene elements from two fatal accidents to educate the public—especially young drivers—on the consequences of distracted, impaired, and intoxicated driving.
“This impactful educational initiative,” Sheriff Jim Allard stated, “was developed to highlight the deadly consequences” of unsafe behaviors behind the wheel or as a passenger.
The trailer is part of Emilee’s Challenge, a program honoring Emilee Rawleigh, who was killed at age 21 in a preventable crash. Her mother, Kim, a longtime dispatcher and the trailer coordinator, has led outreach efforts across schools, community events, and public forums, delivering the stories of victims with passion and urgency.
Emilee’s Challenge was recently featured in Spectrum News’ “Victims & Survivors: The Impact of Violence” series, underscoring the emotional weight and educational value of the program.
