A proposed Holocaust memorial in Albany is one step away from becoming the first state-sponsored site of its kind in New York, according to a report by State of Politics. The bill, led by Sen. Patricia Fahy and Assemblymember Gabriella Romero, has cleared both chambers of the state Legislature and now awaits Governor Kathy Hochul’s signature.
The memorial would be located at Empire State Plaza and aims to educate the public with Holocaust history and survivor testimonies. Advocates, including Deborah Sturm Rausch, whose father survived Dachau, believe the site will serve as a beacon of tolerance and remembrance.
Supporters say the project is urgent as antisemitic incidents in the U.S. have surged to over 9,300 in 2024, up from 2,700 in 2021.
