New York schools brace for full-day phone ban

Starting next school year, New York will ban smartphones in all public and charter schools from arrival to dismissal. Officials tell Spectrum News the “bell-to-bell” restriction is meant to boost safety and student focus—not to oppose technology, but to prioritize healthier learning environments.

The state has pledged $13.5 million to support implementation. Districts like Greece Central are already deploying systems like locked phone pouches and advanced scanners to detect weapons, vapes, and devices. Leaders say these efforts promote both security and academic engagement.

Students and educators report early signs of success, noting fewer distractions and better in-person interactions. Districts must post updated phone policies online by August 1.
