Electric bus mandate faces resistance in CNY

Central New York school districts continue pushing back on the state’s electric bus requirement, according to CNY Central. Only one district—Newfield—approved an electric bus purchase this year, while many others opted to stick with diesel.

State law requires full electric fleets by 2035, though new waivers could give districts up to four extra years. Lawmakers like Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli say the mandate will be enforced but promise flexibility for schools making good-faith efforts.

Opponents argue the plan is financially unrealistic. The Empire Center estimates statewide costs could reach $9 billion. While some districts have received federal help, future support is uncertain under the Trump administration.
