Over a two-year period, Geneva police officer Trevor Wagner was disciplined 11 times for failing to perform basic duties, according to USA Today report.
His infractions included not investigating a burglary, mishandling domestic violence cases, and misusing department equipment. In 2021, he was suspended for five days without pay and resigned the following year.
Chief Ronald Eveland attributed Wagner’s failures to department understaffing, especially after 2020, when the force lost experienced officers and public scrutiny increased. Wagner’s struggles, Eveland said, became more visible as he worked more shifts alone.
Geneva police now face ongoing recruitment and retention issues. Most current officers have only a few years’ experience, raising concerns about future issues.
