As hurricane season approaches, New York State is urging residents to stay prepared by signing up for a new real-time emergency and weather alert system. The new service, called Triple Three Triple One, allows New Yorkers to receive critical alerts directly on their phones — helping communities respond faster to severe weather, flooding, and other emergencies.
The launch coincides with national Hurricane Preparedness Week and builds on ongoing efforts to improve public safety across the state.
How the new emergency alert system works
Signing up for the new Triple Three Triple One alert system is simple:
- Text the name of your county (no spaces) to 333111.
- In New York City, text your borough name (e.g., StatenIsland, Brooklyn).
- To receive alerts for the entire NYC metro area, text NewYorkCity.
Residents can also subscribe to multiple counties by texting additional county names one at a time. The system is free to join, and available on all major cell carriers, though standard messaging rates may apply.
The alert system is managed by New York’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES) and is designed to deliver real-time updates on weather events, public safety emergencies, and other urgent situations.
Preparing for hurricane season 2025
With the Atlantic hurricane season officially beginning on June 1, state leaders are emphasizing the importance of preparation. Forecasters predict an above-average season this year, with 17 named storms, 9 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes expected, according to Colorado State University’s preseason outlook.
Governor Kathy Hochul and state emergency officials are encouraging all residents to stay informed, create emergency plans, and stock up on supplies.
“Being prepared is crucial when it comes to extreme weather,” said Dr. Nick Bassill, Director of the New York State Weather Risk Communication Center. “Following trusted alerts can make a significant difference when severe conditions strike.”
More investments to boost emergency response
In addition to the new alert system, New York is investing heavily in flood mitigation and emergency response:
- $15 million in flood-related equipment — including pumps, generators, and barriers — will be distributed to 51 counties.
- State Emergency Operations Center (EOC) training — new simulation exercises are underway to better prepare staff for tropical storms.
- Citizen Preparedness Corps training — over 400,000 residents have already received disaster preparedness training.
- Utility readiness — approximately 5,500 utility workers are standing by for restoration efforts during major storms.
Infrastructure improvements are also happening across major facilities. The Port Authority has upgraded flood protections at airports, tunnels, and the World Trade Center to better withstand severe weather and rising sea levels.
How to stay informed
In addition to signing up for the new text alerts, residents are encouraged to:
- Monitor local news and official updates.
- Follow the National Weather Service and state emergency agencies.
- Visit the Hurricane Safety page for more information.
