Ginna nuclear plant to conduct full siren test May 6

Residents in the area around the R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant can expect to hear sirens next Tuesday as part of a full test of the facility’s public notification system.

The scheduled test will take place at 3 p.m. on May 6 and will last approximately three to five minutes. All 96 emergency sirens located within a 10-mile radius of the plant—including much of Webster and areas near Irondequoit Bay—will sound during the exercise.

The test will be conducted by Constellation Energy Generation in coordination with the City of Rochester/Monroe County 911 center and the Wayne County Emergency Operations Center. Additional single-siren tests may also occur throughout the day.

Officials stress that no public action is required, as this is only a routine test. In the event of an actual emergency, the sirens are intended to prompt residents to tune in to a local Emergency Alert System (EAS) station for official information.
