Schools struggle with costly electric bus switch

New York school districts are racing to meet a state mandate for all-electric bus fleets by 2035, but many say the road ahead is bumpy, according to Spectrum News 1.

Districts like Shenendehowa are piloting electric buses, tracking how battery range holds up in cold weather and on long routes. Early data shows winter conditions can cut battery performance by at least 10%. With costs reaching up to $500,000 per vehicle, many districts remain cautious despite available state and federal incentives.

While some communities have embraced the change with grant-backed purchases, others, like Churchville-Chili, have rejected proposals over budget concerns. Energy officials emphasize that long-term savings and funding support can ease the transition—but school leaders say they need more time and flexibility.
