A new chapter in Naples’ rich history will be unveiled this Friday as the Naples Historical Society prepares to reveal a long-awaited historic marker at the Naples Memorial Town Hall.
The event, dubbed “The Big Reveal,” is scheduled for April 25 at 12:00 noon, coinciding with National Historic Marker Day. The society has kept the subject of the marker under wraps, hinting only that it celebrates something the Naples Valley is “best known for.”
The unveiling ties into a growing national movement to preserve and celebrate local history. National Historic Marker Day, held annually on the last Friday in April, encourages communities to maintain and spotlight historical markers. Since its inaugural celebration in 2021—established by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation and later recognized by the National Day Calendar—interest in local history preservation has grown. The Historical Marker Database now lists more than 209,000 markers across the country.
Last year, the Naples Historical Society applied for a grant from the Pomeroy Foundation to create the new marker. Board members conducted extensive research using archival materials to support the application. Their work paid off when the grant was awarded and the marker arrived in Naples last fall. It has remained hidden ever since, waiting for this moment to go public.
“What will go atop this post at Naples Memorial Town Hall?” the society teased in its announcement. “Come to the big reveal to find out.”
