Brutus man arrested after GPS tracker leads deputies to stolen vehicle

Deputies arrested a Brutus man early Friday morning after locating a stolen vehicle using GPS tracking technology.

Harold J. Calkins, 39, was taken into custody just after midnight on April 18. According to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, the arrest followed a report of a vehicle theft in the Village of Weedsport.

The vehicle’s owner contacted 911 around 12:13 a.m., reporting the larceny and informing dispatchers that a GPS tracker was installed in the vehicle. Authorities said the owner provided real-time location updates, allowing deputies to quickly locate the vehicle on Ira Station Road in the Town of Victory.

Deputies stopped the vehicle and found Calkins inside as the sole occupant. He was arrested and charged with one count of Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Third Degree under New York State Penal Law.

Calkins was processed and arraigned in CAP Court before being remanded to the Cayuga County Jail without bail. He is scheduled to appear in Victory Town Court at noon on April 23.

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office encourages anyone with additional information about the incident to contact their office or leave an anonymous tip through the SaferWatch app.
