NYSEG and RG&E Urge Call to 811 Before Digging

As outdoor projects kick off with the arrival of spring, NYSEG and RG&E are reminding customers to call 811 before breaking ground. The warning comes during National Safe Digging Month, a time when safety advocates emphasize the importance of marking underground utilities before digging.

“Remember to plan ahead with your outdoor projects this year,” said Jason Marsh, supervisor of Damage Prevention for NYSEG and RG&E. “First and foremost, call 811 before you dig or log onto UDIGNY.org to have public utilities marked out.”

Homeowners and contractors are required by New York State law to contact UDig NY at least two working days before starting any excavation. That includes everything from installing a fence to planting a tree. Failing to mark underground lines can result in dangerous utility strikes and costly repairs.

“Everyone needs to do their part to keep our communities safe,” Marsh added. “That starts with a simple fast and free service to have buried utilities marked.”

Residents should familiarize themselves with Code 753, which governs the protection of underground infrastructure in New York. The companies stressed that even minor projects can hit critical systems such as electric, gas, water, and telecom lines.

Tips for safe digging include outlining the work area in white paint, confirming that all utilities on a UDig NY ticket have been marked, and using hand tools around marked lines. NYSEG and RG&E also advised customers that private utility lines are the homeowner’s responsibility and may require additional steps to locate.

In the event of damage to underground facilities, customers are urged to call 911 and notify the utility immediately. NYSEG can be reached at 800.572.1121 for gas emergencies and 800.572.1131 for electrical issues. RG&E customers should call 800.743.1702 for gas and 800.743.1701 for electric.

The reminder comes as part of a broader safety campaign to prevent accidents and keep utility service reliable throughout the state.
