Drivers across Cayuga County are being reminded to slow down and stay alert as seasonal farm activity brings more slow-moving vehicles onto local roads.
The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is urging motorists to use caution as tractors, farm equipment, horse-drawn buggies, and bicycles become more common during the spring, summer, and fall months.
Officials say the increased mix of vehicle types raises the risk of serious crashes, particularly when drivers fail to reduce speed or allow enough space. According to the sheriff’s office, crashes involving agricultural vehicles are significantly more dangerous, with a much higher likelihood of fatalities compared to other types of accidents.
Motorists are advised to watch for the orange slow-moving vehicle emblem, which signals that a vehicle is traveling at reduced speeds. Drivers should slow down, avoid risky passing maneuvers, and remain patient, especially since operators of farm equipment or buggies may have limited visibility.
The reminder comes as rural roadways see heavier use during planting and growing seasons, when agricultural operations are most active.
Officials emphasize that taking a few extra seconds to slow down and give space can prevent serious injuries or worse.
