Elon Musk’s push to overhaul government agencies under his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative is now targeting the Social Security Administration (SSA) — and it’s generating both hope and skepticism.
During a recent interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Musk claimed that DOGE’s restructuring of the SSA would “make Social Security work better for the people who truly need it.” But many experts say it remains unclear what those changes mean for beneficiaries today — or in the years ahead.
What Is DOGE?

The Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, is a Musk-backed effort to streamline federal agencies using private-sector strategies. Its mission: reduce bureaucratic waste, modernize systems, and improve service delivery.
Musk has said the SSA is “a prime example of inefficiency” and has vowed to use AI and automation to overhaul the way benefits are processed and paid out.
Will DOGE Increase Social Security Benefits?
In his interview, Musk hinted that DOGE could free up billions in administrative savings, which could be redirected to increase benefits for “legitimate recipients.”
However, there are no concrete plans or legislation yet that detail how — or if — those savings would translate into higher monthly payments.
“Efficiency doesn’t necessarily mean more money for beneficiaries,” said retirement policy analyst Mary Johnson. “It could just mean faster processing or fewer errors.”
Experts Are Divided
Some economists and analysts are cautiously optimistic. They say modernizing SSA systems could speed up application times, reduce fraud, and lower administrative costs. But they also note that benefit amounts are determined by law, and any increase would still require Congressional approval.
Others are more skeptical.
“This feels more like a tech PR move than serious policy,” said Dr. Elaine Bowers, a professor of public administration. “Until Congress acts, Social Security payouts won’t change.”
What Changes Could Be Coming?
Here are some possible outcomes if DOGE reforms move forward:
- Faster claims processing for retirement and disability benefits
- More accessible digital tools for managing accounts
- AI-powered fraud detection and appeal resolution
- Streamlined communications between SSA and banks
- Potential pilot programs for digital benefit tracking
What’s Next?
For now, Social Security beneficiaries won’t see any changes to their monthly payments or application process due to DOGE. However, if Congress begins considering legislation tied to Musk’s plan, changes could emerge in 2026 or beyond.
Musk has also admitted that any increase in benefits would require bipartisan support, which may be hard to secure during an election year.
