Gov. Kathy Hochul fired back at President Trump’s new executive order threatening to cut funding to states with “cashless” bail laws, according to State of Politics. She said Trump doesn’t understand how New York’s bail system works, pointing to reforms she pushed that made serious crimes bail-eligible again.
Hochul said crime is down and accused some judges of ignoring recent law changes. Trump’s order has energized GOP critics, including Rep. Elise Stefanik, who’s backing federal legislation to make the policy permanent.
Democrats warn the move could reignite 2022’s political pitfalls, when crime concerns hurt their midterm chances — despite falling crime stats.
