State Police fatally shoot armed man after gunfire at Saratoga barracks in Malta

A 69-year-old man was fatally shot by New York State Police Wednesday afternoon after he opened fire on the Saratoga barracks in Malta, prompting an immediate response from Troopers stationed inside.

The incident occurred around 1:43 p.m., when Troopers heard gunshots coming from outside the building. Upon exiting the station, they found David M. Levine of Malta standing in the parking lot armed with a long gun. Police say Levine refused repeated commands to drop the weapon and instead aimed it at the Troopers, who then fired their division-issued firearms, striking and killing him.

Investigators later confirmed that Levine had fired several rounds into the occupied State Police building. The exchange was captured on multiple body-worn cameras, though officials say that footage will not be released while the investigation remains active.

The Attorney General’s Office was notified and responded to the scene. The New York State Police expressed their appreciation for assistance from the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office.

As a result of the shooting, State Route 9 was temporarily closed in both directions between the Route 67 traffic circle at Dunning Street and Saratoga Village Boulevard. Southbound lanes reopened in the evening, while northbound lanes were expected to reopen by 9 p.m.

Authorities held a press conference at SP Wilton at 7:00 p.m. to address the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and officials emphasized that there is no further threat to public safety.
