The Hobart Statesmen secured their third consecutive NCAA Division III men’s hockey championship, edging Utica 2-1 in overtime on Sunday night.
Kahlil Fontana delivered the game-winning goal with less than two minutes remaining in the extra period after Utica turned the puck over behind their net, allowing Fontana to skate right in and slide the puck past goaltender Ryan Piros, who made 44 saves for the Pioneers.
The Statesmen entered the third period trailing 1-0 but pulled even when Easton Ryan tapped in a rebound with 11:23 left in regulation. Goaltender Damon Beaver was stellar for Hobart, making 43 saves, including 14 in overtime.
With the victory, the Statesmen became just the third program in Division III men’s ice hockey history to win three or more consecutive titles.
Hobart capped off the season with an impressive 29-1-1 record.
