The Cayuga County Legislature has blocked a proposal to implement a vehicle use tax, voting against scheduling a public hearing on the measure. The tax would have charged vehicle owners $10 to $20 per registration, with funds directed to the general budget and highway projects.
Opponents, including Legislator Mark Strong, argued the tax would burden small businesses and trucking companies. Supporters, like Legislator Heidi Nightengale, wanted a public hearing to gather feedback. Despite debate, a majority opposed moving forward, effectively killing the proposal.
Had it passed, Cayuga County would have joined 39 other New York counties with a similar tax. For now, the measure is off the table.
