New York memo enforces hiring ban on striking officers

A state memo outlines how agencies must comply with Gov. Kathy Hochul’s executive order barring rehiring correction officers fired for striking. Agencies must verify an applicant’s employment history and deny jobs to those terminated for participating in the illegal work stoppage.

Hochul’s order cites the Taylor Law, arguing that striking officers violated public trust and disrupted services. The ban also extends to local municipal hiring unless candidates complete a specific program.

The policy has sparked legal challenges from Chemung and Oneida counties, which call it government overreach. State Senate Republicans have also urged Hochul to rescind the order, escalating the controversy.
