New York lawmakers say they may support future adjustments to the Good Cause Eviction law, following calls from tenant and landlord groups for clearer rules and reduced confusion.
The law, passed last year, limits rent hikes and protects tenants from unjust eviction. Advocates now want to simplify paperwork, clarify lease terms, and better inform tenants of their rights. Lawmakers say changes are likely to be technical, not sweeping, and will happen after the state budget is finalized.
Some housing advocates worry any edits could weaken the law, but others believe stronger local versions show growing support for tougher tenant protections.
