Severe weather outbreak threatens 54 million across Midwest

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Millions across the Midwest are bracing for a severe weather outbreak today, with the greatest risks for strong tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail in Illinois and Indiana. Cities like Chicago, Indianapolis, and Fort Wayne are in the storm’s path, with meteorologists warning of potentially dangerous conditions throughout the evening.

Severe Weather Outbreak Expected Across Multiple States

According to NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC), a Level 3 out of 5 risk has been issued for nearly 2 million people in central Illinois and western Indiana. This includes cities such as:

  • Peoria, IL
  • Decatur, IL
  • Champaign, IL

While the overall outbreak isn’t expected to be as deadly as last week’s storms that claimed 43 lives, today’s system still poses a significant threat.

Storm Impacts & Timeline

Severe thunderstorms have already developed over Nebraska and Iowa, with activity moving eastward toward the Midwest and Ohio Valley. This system could bring significant challenges to parts of the U.S. that have already experienced severe weather. Unfortunately, they will likely continue experiencing severe weather outbreaks this spring.

  • Mid-Afternoon to Evening: Supercell thunderstorms may form, increasing the risk of strong tornadoes (EF-2 or higher) in Illinois and Indiana.
  • Damaging Wind & Hail: Areas from Michigan and Wisconsin to the Deep South could see powerful wind gusts and large hail.
  • Tornado Threat in Chicago & Indianapolis: While these cities are only under a Level 2 risk, tornadoes remain a concern.

What to Expect & How to Prepare

  • Stay updated with National Weather Service warnings.
  • Have an emergency plan in case of tornado warnings.
  • Avoid travel during severe storms.
  • Seek shelter immediately if conditions worsen.

Looking Ahead

Storms will move east overnight, bringing heavy rain and isolated tornado threats to Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi.

While today’s outbreak won’t be as widespread as last week’s, the risk of life-threatening conditions remains high. Stay alert and take necessary precautions.
