Cayuga County debates successor for vacated legislature seat

A 1975 law is under scrutiny as Cayuga County legislators consider how to fill the District 10 seat left vacant by Democrat Stephanie DeVito, The Citizen reports. The law requires her replacement to be from the same political party.

Democrats want Amy Sargent, who’s running in the special election, appointed to the seat. But some conservatives are pushing for Republican Michael Pettigrass, who narrowly lost to DeVito last year. They argue past misconduct allegations would have changed the outcome.

Though rare, the Legislature has violated the party rule before. A decision on the appointment—or to leave the seat vacant—remains pending.
