IRS delays office return after running out of desks

The IRS abruptly postponed its return-to-office mandate for 20,000 customer service employees after realizing it lacked enough desks to accommodate them. The last-minute change, announced just before the scheduled return, came amid concerns that overcrowding would disrupt taxpayer services during tax season.

The agency, which expanded under the Inflation Reduction Act, has struggled with space constraints despite leasing over 500 offices. Union leaders criticized the chaotic rollout, warning that the back-to-office order could have worsened customer service.

With the IRS already facing a hiring freeze and mass layoffs, tax experts fear longer wait times for taxpayers. The return-to-office mandate remains on hold as the agency scrambles to find a solution.
