REAL ID deadline approaches: What travelers need to know

Starting May 7, U.S. travelers will need a REAL ID-compliant license or another approved form of identification to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities. While enforcement may roll out gradually, officials urge people to check if their current ID meets the requirements.

Only 56% of state-issued IDs were REAL ID-compliant as of early 2024, prompting concerns about delays at DMVs. If your license has a black or gold star, you’re set. Otherwise, applying requires documents proving identity, residence, and lawful status.

Though not mandatory for driving or voting, a REAL ID is essential for air travel without a passport. Authorities advise securing one soon, as processing times vary by state. Travelers without a compliant ID may face additional security measures at airports.
