A new bill introduced in the New York State Assembly seeks to raise awareness about traffic safety while honoring victims of fatal vehicle accidents. The “Alexander John Smullen Traffic Safety Memorial Law,” sponsored by Assemblyman Robert Smullen (R,C-Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks), would allow families to purchase roadway signage memorializing loved ones lost in traffic incidents.
The legislation is named after Smullen’s son, AJ, who died in March 2024 after being struck by a vehicle the previous month. Assembly Minority Leader Will Barclay expressed strong support for the measure, calling it a “fitting tribute” that both remembers victims and emphasizes the importance of safe driving.
“These signs will serve as both a reminder about the importance of driving safely and provide a touching public display to honor the victims of these accidents,” Barclay stated. “This measure not only memorializes those we have lost, but it may very well prevent future loss.”
The initiative has gained bipartisan support, with lawmakers across party lines advocating for its passage. Supporters argue that the bill would send a strong message about the dangers of reckless driving and highlight the need for improved road safety measures.
Smullen is also set to unveil a memorial sign for AJ outside the Bellevue Woman’s Center on Route 7 in Niskayuna, near the site of his son’s accident. The area has been identified as a hazardous stretch of road, with another pedestrian fatality occurring there shortly after the bill was introduced.
Lawmakers backing the bill see it as both a memorial and a call to action. “Clearly, action is needed,” Barclay said, urging his colleagues to advance the legislation.
