Outdoor enthusiasts in the Finger Lakes region have a new reason to lace up their hiking boots—First Saturday Hikes are back. The New York State Parks’ Finger Lakes Region has announced the return of this popular monthly hiking series, offering a guided exploration of some of the area’s most scenic trails.
Led by environmental educators, these free hikes cater to all skill levels and take participants through a variety of landscapes, from the breathtaking Gorge Trail at Watkins Glen to the more secluded Bear Trail at Buttermilk Falls.
The program aims to connect hikers with nature while promoting environmental education and wellness. No registration is required, making it easy for participants to join at their convenience.
The schedule kicks off on March 1 at Taughannock Falls State Park, where hikers will follow the Gorge Trail to the park’s iconic 215-foot waterfall. As the seasons change, the hikes offer a diverse mix of terrains and experiences. The April 5 hike at Buttermilk Falls takes adventurers through forested paths along Lake Treman, while the July 5 excursion at Fillmore Glen leads hikers past stunning gorges and waterfalls.
One of the most unique offerings this year is the September 6 full moon hike at Allan H. Treman State Marine Park. Under the glow of a nearly full moon, participants will walk along Cayuga Inlet, taking in the shimmering reflections on the water.
For those seeking a challenge, the November 1 hike at Robert H. Treman State Park covers 4.5 miles, winding through the rugged Rim Trail before descending into the Lower Park and looping back on the Gorge Trail. The season concludes on December 6 with a 5-mile trek along the Black Diamond Trail, offering a scenic winter landscape before the new year.
Whether you’re an experienced hiker or simply looking for a way to get outside and enjoy the Finger Lakes, First Saturday Hikes provide an ideal opportunity. For more information on hike difficulty, locations, or weather-related changes, participants can email [email protected].
