The State University of New York (SUNY) system is seeing enrollment growth after years of decline, with struggling campuses reducing or eliminating financial deficits. SUNY Chancellor John King credits cost-effective education and targeted retention efforts for the turnaround.
To stabilize finances, some colleges cut low-enrollment degree programs while adding in-demand options. SUNY Delhi erased its deficit, and SUNY Potsdam and Fredonia significantly reduced theirs. New retention programs—offering advising, financial aid, and career support—are expanding statewide.
King is prioritizing career readiness, pushing for all students to complete internships. Efforts include funding for transportation and credit costs. Gov. Hochul has proposed making retention programs permanent, aiming to strengthen SUNY’s appeal and student success rates.
