NY expands HEAP program to help more seniors

  • Staff Report

New York is making it easier for seniors to access the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) by automatically enrolling eligible participants from the Elderly Pharmaceutical Coverage Program (EPIC). Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the initiative, which aims to help seniors cover heating costs.

The change, set to take effect in June 2025, ensures EPIC participants are identified and enrolled in HEAP within 60 days of eligibility. HEAP offers up to $900 in heating assistance based on income and fuel type.

Seniors in Southern Tier counties can apply through local social services offices or online. Officials encourage eligible residents to take advantage of the program to ease winter heating expenses.
