Lawmakers push back on Hochul’s $3B inflation refund plan

  • Staff Report

Democratic lawmakers are opposing Gov. Kathy Hochul’s proposal to spend $3 billion on one-time inflation relief checks, arguing the funds should be used for long-term affordability solutions. Hochul’s plan would send $300 to single filers earning under $150,000 and $500 to joint filers making up to $300,000, but critics say the money could be better spent elsewhere.

Sen. Pat Fahy and others propose dividing the funds among initiatives like expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit, increasing child tax credits, and reducing the state’s $7 billion unemployment insurance debt. Some lawmakers also advocate doubling the Enhanced STAR exemption for senior property tax relief.

Hochul stands by her plan, while Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie remains open to discussion. With budget negotiations underway, lawmakers are weighing broader affordability measures over short-term relief.
