Tour Cayuga is marking February 19 as Destination Professionals Day, recognizing the individuals and organizations that drive tourism, economic growth, and community engagement across the globe.
The date carries historical significance, commemorating the founding of the world’s first destination organization. On February 19, 1896, members of the Detroit Chamber of Commerce and the Detroit Manufacturers Club established the Detroit Convention and Businessman’s League, an entity focused on attracting conventions to the city. That effort laid the groundwork for what has since evolved into a multitrillion-dollar global industry.
Today, more than 10,000 destination organizations operate worldwide, including destination marketing organizations, convention and visitors’ bureaus, tourism boards, and sports commissions. The travel and tourism sector employs nearly 348 million people and was expected to generate over $11 trillion—about 10% of global GDP—by 2024, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council.
In Cayuga County alone, tourism’s economic impact is substantial. Tour Cayuga reports that in 2024, tourism generated $157 million for the local economy, providing $18.66 million in state and local tax revenue. The industry also employed 1,541 people and resulted in a tax relief benefit of $604 per household.
Recognizing February 19 as Destination Professionals Day serves several key purposes: raising awareness of the sector’s contributions to local and global economies, celebrating the dedication of professionals in the field, and inspiring future generations to explore careers in destination management. The date also serves as a tribute to the industry’s legacy, which continues to shape communities like Cayuga County into thriving places to visit, work, and live.
