The New York Power Authority scrapped a major hydropower rate increase after Gov. Kathy Hochul intervened, citing concerns over rising energy costs. The plan would have raised rates from $12.88/MWh to $33.05 before settling at $24.26 by 2029. The move faced strong opposition, particularly from Western New York Republicans who rely on hydropower for businesses and low-income households.
NYPA defended the hike as necessary for maintenance costs but will now draft a revised plan. Hochul also pressured Con Edison to abandon a steep rate hike in New York City, reinforcing her stance against excessive energy costs.
As lawmakers debate the financial burden of clean energy policies, Hochul remains firm on protecting consumers while balancing the state’s climate goals. A new proposal is expected in the coming months.
