The Finger Lakes will see a busy weather week as lake effect snow and multiple systems keep the forecast snowy. The National Weather Service has issued advisories for Wayne and Northern Cayuga counties, but those are set to expire later today.
A strong westerly flow early this week will drive localized, heavy snowfall primarily east and southeast of Lake Ontario. Conditions will remain harsh in the Tug Hill region and in northern parts of Cayuga and Oswego counties today, with snow bands intensifying tonight as a surface trough crosses the lake.
As Tuesday progresses, lake effect snow will become more scattered and lighter, but a wintry mix is poised to move into the region by midweek. A low-pressure system from the Ohio Valley will spread snow, sleet, and freezing rain across western and central New York starting Wednesday night. The heaviest snow appears likely to track north of the region, though a slight shift could increase accumulations here.
Meanwhile, high winds are prompting Small Craft Advisories on Lake Ontario. Mariners should expect hazardous conditions through Tuesday, with shifting winds later in the week.
By Friday, another round of lake effect snow is forecast as temperatures dip and atmospheric conditions remain favorable for snow showers east of both Lakes Erie and Ontario. Weekend forecasts suggest a more complex system could bring additional precipitation, although details remain uncertain.
