A driver was rescued from a waterway after a rollover crash near the Schuyler and Chemung county line on State Route 13, according to the Odessa Fire Department.
The accident occurred around 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, when emergency responders were dispatched to the scene. The driver had managed to escape from the vehicle but was in the water when first responders arrived.
Odessa firefighters conducted a cold water rescue and transferred the patient to CEMS Ambulance without incident.
Officials credited the driver’s smart watch with helping alert 911 to the crash. The accident was in a location difficult to see from the roadway, making the automated emergency alert a critical factor in the successful rescue.
