Legal gun owners in New York may need to recertify their licenses in 2025, following updates under the 2022 Concealed Carry Improvement Act. Deadlines now vary based on permit type. Concealed carry permits issued before September 2020 required recertification by August 2023, with future cycles on a three- or five-year schedule, according to Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romeo.
Permit holders must recertify through state police, not county clerks, which Romeo describes as a “splintered” and confusing system. Brandon Lewis, a firearms instructor, agrees, advocating for a unified statewide process.
Both officials urge gun owners to review their requirements on the state police portal to avoid potential suspension or revocation.
