A Louisiana grand jury indicted Dr. Margaret Carpenter, her company, and a third individual for prescribing abortion pills in violation of the state’s near-total abortion ban. Carpenter is accused of mailing the drugs to Louisiana through her New York-based telemedicine practice, marking the first criminal case of this nature since Roe v. Wade was overturned.
Louisiana, which recently classified abortion drugs as controlled substances, allows penalties of up to 15 years in prison for illegal abortions. The case may test New York’s shield laws designed to protect telehealth providers assisting patients in anti-abortion states.
Carpenter’s supporters condemned the prosecution as a threat to reproductive rights, while state officials vowed strict enforcement of abortion laws.
