The New York State Department of Labor has announced preliminary local area unemployment rates for December 2024. According to the department, New York State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained steady at 4.4% last month.
The local unemployment rates, which are not seasonally adjusted, reflect year-to-year comparisons to account for seasonal hiring trends such as holiday or summer employment. These figures were derived from methods outlined by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, incorporating data from the Current Population Survey, which contacts about 3,100 New York households monthly.
The labor department emphasized that the unemployment rate data, based on statistical regression models, helps reduce irregularities caused by sampling errors. These methodologies allow for timely insights into economic trends.
County-level unemployment rates, as well as data for metropolitan areas and labor market regions, are part of the report. The department also highlighted updates in its methodology, which include real-time benchmarking to improve accuracy and reflect significant economic changes more quickly.
Statewide job data is collected through a separate federal-state survey of business establishments, which excludes self-employed individuals and certain other groups. As such, unemployment rate estimates and unemployment insurance claims may not always align.
The department reiterated its commitment to transparency and accessibility, providing detailed technical explanations of the data for public understanding.
