Thruway Authority warns of E-ZPass phishing scam

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Motorists in New York are being warned of a phishing scam involving fake texts from “E-ZPass NY” or “Tolls By Mail NY,” which falsely claim unpaid balances and seek sensitive personal details. The Thruway Authority stressed that neither entity requests such information via text or email.

Reports indicate that over $11 million was lost to phishing scams in 2023, with hotspots in cities like Rochester and Albany. Officials urge recipients to avoid interacting with these messages and instead contact customer service directly.

Authorities recommend reporting incidents to law enforcement, as well as filing complaints with the FCC and FTC, to prevent further fraud. Spreading awareness can help others avoid falling victim to these scams.
