President Donald Trump is rapidly reshaping the federal government, sidestepping congressional oversight with moves like freezing federal funds, giving Elon Musk access to sensitive Treasury systems, and pushing to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Republicans, despite previously opposing executive overreach under Democratic presidents, have largely supported Trump’s actions, citing his “mandate” to streamline government.
Democrats, however, have called these actions illegal, warning of national security risks and undermining federal law.
They are now rallying against Trump’s efforts, introducing legislation to limit unauthorized access to Treasury data and threatening to block his future nominees. Outside USAID headquarters, lawmakers pledged legal and public resistance to protect federal agencies from being hollowed out.
