Starting fall 2026, SUNY undergraduates will take courses in civic discourse and artificial intelligence (AI) as part of their 30-credit general education requirements.
Announced by SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr., the changes aim to equip students with skills for ethical AI use, critical evaluation of information, and respectful civic engagement.
The updates, approved in late 2024, align with SUNY’s Civics and Service Agenda and reflect growing technological and societal needs. The curriculum maintains a 30-credit framework, avoiding additional course burdens. SUNY leaders and educators applaud the initiative for preparing students for professional and civic life, with campuses able to implement the changes before 2026.
