New York plans lead paint rental registry to protect children

New York is introducing a lead paint rental registry to address lead poisoning risks in pre-1980 buildings. Landlords will be required to inspect and certify properties every three years, ensuring no lead hazards like chipping paint remain.

The program, launching in November 2025, targets 25 high-risk communities, including Albany, Buffalo, and Rochester. Inspections will cost $250–$450 per unit, with remediation expenses varying widely. Local health departments will audit inspections and report findings to the state.

Backed by $120 million in funding, the initiative includes grants for landlords, training programs, and increased contractor certification. Officials stress that preventing lead exposure saves significant healthcare and education costs while protecting children from lifelong harm.
