Psychology students gain real-world insights at NAMI Conference

Students from Professor Jamie Bodenlos’ Clinical Psychology capstone course attended the 2024 National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Conference in Syracuse, N.Y., exploring the theme “Turning Pain into Purpose.”

The event focused on the dual diagnosis of mental health and substance abuse, providing valuable insights from clinicians, researchers, and individuals with lived experiences.

Students attended sessions on diagnostic tools, treatment strategies, and family support systems. Highlights included personal stories of recovery and discussions emphasizing substance use disorders as treatable brain diseases rather than moral failings.

Attendees, including Grace Meagher ’25 and Saoirse Higgins-Corbett ’25, described the experience as transformative, deepening their understanding of mental health treatment and the importance of compassion in clinical practice.
