Senator calls for closure of Marcy prison after abuse scandal

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

State Sen. Julia Salazar is urging the closure of Marcy Correctional Facility following the brutal assault and subsequent death of inmate Robert L. Brooks, now under federal and state investigation. Salazar called the incident a profound policy failure demanding immediate action.

Gov. Kathy Hochul, who recently visited the facility, has the authority to close up to three more prisons by March under expedited powers. Marcy prison has faced past allegations of systemic abuse and a culture of fear, highlighted in a 2022 report by the Correctional Association of New York.

The governor has announced leadership changes and reforms but has not confirmed plans to shut down the facility.
