The City of Canandaigua has been awarded $84,000 through New York State’s Climate Smart Communities Grant program to conduct a climate vulnerability assessment (CVA) for the Sucker Brook Watershed, state officials announced.
The grant, part of over $16 million allocated statewide, aims to help municipalities address climate risks and advance local resilience efforts. The assessment will include a detailed flood analysis, concept designs for upland flood resilience projects, and recommendations for regulatory changes to improve floodplain management and mitigate future risks.
State officials emphasized that this funding aligns with New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act goals, which mandate an 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The Sucker Brook Watershed, which has faced repeated flooding challenges, is a critical area for Canandaigua’s climate adaptation planning. The CVA will equip city officials with data-driven insights to address vulnerabilities and strengthen local infrastructure against severe weather events.
