Hochul calls for end to Electoral College system

Governor Kathy Hochul called for abolishing the Electoral College while overseeing New York’s 28 electoral votes for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in Albany. She argued the system undermines equal voting rights, advocating for a national popular vote to determine the presidency.

New York’s electors officially backed Harris, who won the state by 12 points. This marked the first time New York had 28 votes post-2020 Census, its lowest count since 1808.

Hochul criticized the system for focusing campaigns on swing states. Ending it would require a constitutional amendment, a challenging process.
