Yankees acquire closer Devin Williams in trade with Brewers

The New York Yankees made a significant addition to their bullpen Friday by acquiring Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams in exchange for left-hander Nestor Cortes, infield prospect Caleb Durbin, and cash considerations, ESPN’s Jeff Passan announced.

Williams, 30, is considered one of baseball’s top relievers, boasting a devastating changeup alongside his four-seam fastball. Despite missing most of 2024 due to stress fractures in his back, he was dominant upon returning, posting a 1.25 ERA and 38 strikeouts over 21.2 innings. Over six MLB seasons, Williams has compiled a 1.83 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 375 strikeouts across 235.2 innings. He will earn about $8.4 million in 2025 before becoming a free agent.

Cortes, who became expendable after the Yankees signed starting pitcher Max Fried to an eight-year, $218 million contract, had a strong 2024 season with a 3.77 ERA over 174.1 innings. Like Williams, Cortes is entering his final arbitration year.

Durbin, 24, has hit .269/.374/.407 with 22 homers in 281 minor league games.

The Yankees now shift their focus to bats as they pursue guys like Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger.
