Gov. Kathy Hochul has until Friday to decide on a bill mandating public input before hospitals or health centers close, according to health advocates and lawmakers rallying at the Capitol. They argue the measure would ensure transparency and prevent abrupt closures that disrupt care for thousands.
The bill requires hospitals to notify the state nine months before closing. Lawmakers hope it will protect vulnerable communities and reduce overcrowded emergency rooms. More than 40 hospitals have closed in the past decade, often with little notice, leaving patients stranded.
Supporters, including Assemblywoman Jo Anne Simon, are in discussions with Hochul’s staff. Critics worry hospitals might not anticipate closures, but advocates say proper planning can avoid such issues.
